Answer: Sram and Shimano have different spacing on their derailleurs. As I recall Sram makes a different shifter for each spacing. If the shifter and the derailleur are mismatched only two or three gears will work and you will have to do as I did, buy another shifter. -

Can this be used as a replacement for an rd-tz31a direct mount rear derailleur?
Answer: I have no idea about 'rd-tz31a' but if the number of gears is correct and your click shifter rate of travel matches the derailleur (Shimano vs Sram) you're good to go. -
Question:
Can a direct mount be used to replace one with a hanger?
Answer: You might wanna check with your local bike mech.; but i’m almost certain that your bike will still need an existing Rear Derailleur hanger. This was not the type of RDerailleur designed to mount using the wheel axel/skewer.... hope this helps.
