What is Ardex 89 used for?

Ardex 89 is a rapid waterproofing and crack isolation compound designed for both commercial and residential bathrooms. This cement-based membrane effectively prevents water penetration, ensuring that surfaces remain dry and protected. It's suitable for various substrates, making it an ideal choice for projects like tile installations in wet areas. Users can confidently apply it on floors and walls, knowing they are protecting their investment from moisture-related damage.

How does Ardex 89 create a waterproof barrier?

Ardex 89 employs advanced cement technology to form a durable and resilient membrane that actively resists water infiltration. Upon application, it cures quickly to create a tight seal that can withstand moisture, making it perfect for areas prone to leaks, such as bathrooms and showers. This characteristic allows homeowners and contractors to ensure long-lasting protection against potential water damage.

Is Ardex 89 suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?

While Ardex 89 is primarily designed for internal environments like bathrooms, it can also be adapted for certain outdoor applications. Its strong waterproofing properties make it a reliable choice for areas with limited direct exposure to weather elements. Therefore, if you plan to use it in semi-exposed locations, ensure proper sealing to preserve its integrity.

Can Ardex 89 be used on existing substrates?

Yes, Ardex 89 can be applied over existing tiles and various substrates, provided they are clean, stable, and properly prepared. Its versatile nature allows for the restoration or renovation of surfaces without the need for complete removal of old materials. As a result, this saves both time and labor costs during bathroom renovations or upgrades.

How thick should the layer of Ardex 89 be applied?

The recommended thickness for Ardex 89 application is typically between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch, depending on the specific conditions and requirements of your project. A proper application thickness helps ensure optimal waterproofing effectiveness and crack isolation. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and adjust your application based on surface conditions for the best results.

How quickly does Ardex 89 cure?

Ardex 89 boasts a rapid curing time, allowing it to set within a few hours, enabling subsequent flooring or tiling work to begin promptly. This feature is particularly beneficial for contractors looking to expedite project timelines or for homeowners eager to reduce downtime. Just ensure that the installation area maintains the right temperature and humidity levels for optimal curing performance.

What kind of coverage can I expect from Ardex 89?

The coverage for Ardex 89 varies based on application technique and thickness, but generally, it provides excellent coverage for approximately 1 square meter per 1-1.5 kg. This efficiency allows users to plan their material purchases effectively while ensuring they have enough product for the desired project area. Always calculate based on specific project needs for the best outcome.

Is Ardex 89 safe to use indoors?

Yes, Ardex 89 is solvent-free, making it safe for indoor use in enclosed areas such as bathrooms. Its non-toxic formulation minimizes harmful emissions, ensuring a healthier environment during installation. This is especially important for families or businesses concerned about air quality, allowing them to use the product without the worry of harsh odors or fumes.

How do I apply Ardex 89?

Application of Ardex 89 involves mixing the compound with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions and then spreading it evenly onto the surface using a trowel. It’s advisable to ensure the surface is clean and prepped beforehand. For optimal results, applying a second coat after the first has partially cured may enhance waterproofing and crack isolation. Always refer to the product guide for specific techniques.
