Customer Questions & Answers

  • Question: What is R310A?

Answer: R310A is a transfer switch cover.
  • Question: What is the UL Standard for R310A?

Answer: R310A is UL listed to UL standard 1008.
  • Question: What is the weight of R310A?

    Answer: R310A weighs 25 lbs.
  • Question: Can you put it up in the garage

Answer: You can put this in the garage. This switch is outdoor rated so it can go inside or outside the house.
  • Question: Can you hook up the entire house with this model

Answer: Not likely. It will not handle a 3-ton or larger A/C unit. However, it will work well with most load circuits in the house (up to 10). Buy the R510A Pro/Tran2 X-fer switch (50 amp) if you need to include the A/C unit. Also, you will need a generator that can deliver continuous 12.5 kW or more. Finally, you need to carefully consider your grounding strategy because both the 310 and 510 models pass through the neutral from the house ckt. breaker panel to the generator. You will need to make sure your generator’s neutral is unbonded from its frame. It is highly recommended that you have an electrician install a transfer switch that switches the neutral. That will give you full house standby service from your generator.
  • Question: How long are the wires that are provided to connect to the electrical box?

Answer: The outdoor model comes with about 24-30" leads for each branch circuit, plus the ground and neutral wires. My install ate up most of the wire in the conduit it came with, but still had enough in my main breaker box to splice to.
  • Question: My main breaker panel has GFCI breakers and my generator has a bonded neutral, will this transfer switch work for me

Answer: Once you switch from the main power grid over to the generator power, you will lose the GFCI protection. However, you could replace the breaker in the transfer switch panel to a GFCI type and you will be good to go.
  • Question: Will this work for a 11500 watt champion generator?

Answer: This has a through-put of 7500W. For continuous use (over three hours) they want you to limit it to 80% or 6000W. It will work with your generator but will only accept a 120/240V 30A 4 wire cord. The R510a model is good for 12000 W and is more suited for your generator.
  • Question: Does this transfer switch eliminate the possibility of power back feeding to the utility line or to your generator when power is restored

Answer: With this transfer switch, there’s no feedback to the grid. Because you select on the transfer switch to either be on GENERATOR, OFF or on GRID mode. I always like to disconnect the main breaker and all the circuit breaker’s from the main panel, just to make sure no feedback power would go to the grid.
  • Question: Will this work if you have solar generating back to the electrical grid even during a power outage?

Answer: During a power outage, you do not want to energize the grid thus electrocuting the guys working on the grid to restore power. If your inverter connects to this transfer switch, solar will power your house while isolating your solar system from the grid.
  • Question: Will this transfer switch handle 2 double pole 30amp breakers and 6 single pole 20amp breakers

    Answer: I believe it will.
  • Question: Unit has tie 2 bars between each of 2 selector switches. But only 1 set of breakers are tied together. Why is this?

Answer: You may disregard the bars or leave them to throw on two switches at a time. My unit or switch is set up for ten separate breakers and none have to go on at the same time. If you have a 220V set up I guess it would make it better to have them switch at the same time.
